Whenever you are working with knitting needles, the size is important because their size is directly proportionate to the size of your stitches and how your item will look once it is finished. For this reason you will need to take into consideration not only what type of needle to use but also what size of needle to use as well. The size of a knitting needle is based upon both the length and the diameter of the needle. To begin with, you need to understand that the diameter of the knitting needle refers to its thickness. This will determine what size of stitch you will have, which in turn will determine how big the finished piece will be as well as how it will look. With a thicker needle you will get a larger stitch that has more space between each stitch. So, if you want a smaller stitch that has little space between it, you will then have a smaller piece with smaller stitches. Another thing that is important is the length of the needle. It is important to choose a needle that can easily hold your project while also allowing you to pass the stitches between the needles. Therefore, if you have a really wide project, you are going to need to use longer needles.

Knitting needle sizes have different numbers based upon their measurement. This has nothing to do with their length or their diameter. Furthermore, you should also know that these numbers will be different from one country to the next. For instance, in America a number 5 needle measures 3.75 mm but this is a number 9 needle in Britain. It is for this reason that you will see on some bags of needles “3.75 mm needle” instead of a number. The only knitting needle sizes that are the same in both Britain and America are the size 7 needle which is a 4.5 mm knitting needle. Otherwise you will find that the numbers in America will be low for small diameters and can go all the way up to 50. However, in Britain high numbers are used for low diameters and then the numbers decrease from there.

Dolls are a child’s first best friend. They serve a purpose as friends, they teach nurturing and they are really a child’s first step to becoming social. Dolls can be found in almost any household in toy boxes, on shelves full of collectible dolls, on top of wedding cakes, movie star dolls in a teenagers room and sports dolls that reside in a manly sports room. You can even make your own doll. Rag dolls were the special friend that rode with a child in the back of a covered wagon. Mothers, back then, had never heard of the words “thrift” or “recycle”, but that is exactly what they did to provide their children with a friend. They used scrap rags for the body and the clothes and weeds and straw for the stuffing. In today’s world, if you would like to make your own doll, your choices of supplies are not quite so limited. The basics for a rag doll would be a pattern, fabric and stuffing. Even those basics could be whittled down, somewhat, by using old linens and textiles from your closets and making your own pattern.

For a pattern, start by drawing a rectangle on paper for the body. Draw a circle sitting on one short end of the rectangle for the head. Round the outer corners of the body and the inner corners where the head meets the body in order to shape the pattern. Place the pattern on a doubled piece of chosen body fabric, with the right sides facing. Draw around the pattern. Sew on the drawn lines, leaving the bottom of the body unstitched. Cut the body out a 1/4 inch from the stitched lines. Clip the corners and turn right side out. Stuff the head and body firmly and close the open end.

The normal size for a leg pattern would be the measurement from the bottom of the body to almost the top of the head and slightly narrower than half the body width. The whimsy size could be quite a bit longer. Use fabric that will mimic stockings and cut two for each leg. Sew the legs the same as the body, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Turn and stuff the legs and close the ends. Attach the legs to the bottom seam on the doll’s body. Make the arms as long as the doll’s body and slightly narrower than the doll’s legs. Repeat the sewing used for the legs. Turn and stuff the arms and close the ends. Attach the arms to the shoulder seams of the body.

Are you familiar with the fancy, flowing writing used on many announcement cards, wedding invitations and other important documents? This is a specialized form of art combined with writing skills called calligraphy. Most people can learn how to do it with the proper instruction and practice. The first thing you need to do is collect the correct material. You can’t just grab a pencil and a piece of paper and hope to create beautiful and artful writing. Here is a list of what you should gather together. Most of these items can be found in your local art store or office supply store.

Pencils, erasers and a ruler are used to outline or trace what you will fill in with ink later. Once you master the art, you may be able to skip this first step, but as a beginner you will want all of the advantages you can get. The next things you need are paper, pens and ink. You need to use heavier paper than normal paper, usually the heavier the better, and it needs to be acid free. There are different types of pens, but the best ones use a flat tip instead of the more common ballpoint pens found most places. Calligraphy pens have special tips that are used to make smaller or larger lines and the tips are interchangeable depending on your application. The ink needs to be permanent ink and there are specialized inks just for this. Once you have all of your material, you are ready to get started. There are instructional books and DVDs available or you can find some fancy writing and start trying to copy it. Like most specialized skills, the more you practice the better you will get. Once you have perfected your skills, you can even start hiring your service out.

The tradition of Faberge Eggs to commorate the tradition of Easter, which is continuing even today is a age old tradition which started with the Russian Tsar, during the festive season of Russian Orthodox Church. In 1884, the first Egg was handcrafted on the personal order of the Russian Czar for his beautiful wife, Czarina Maria as a surprise present.

Peter Carl Faberge was a businessman and an expert jeweler, who took up this challenge and came up with an interesting gold Easter egg, encrusted with precious stones and gems. There was a surprise inside each egg and he was commissioned with making an Easter egg every year. The Russian Revolution brought an end to this. To date there are 54 known original Faberge eggs which bring credit to the name of Carl Faberge. Due to the intricate craftsmanship and detailing, many replicas also came into being. However, these days there are many people, who look forward to owning a similar egg while some are able to buy an original Easter egg from private collections, many have to satisfy themselves by buying a replica.

The famous Faberge eggs were crafted from a unique technique that was found by himself in which 140 colors were used. Each layer of enamel was fired upon after each application which gave a shiny lustrous look to the Egg. He had used precious noble metals like gold and silver while even today you can get amazing silver eggs with surprises inside in precious stones and inlay work. Not all metal eggs are expensive as you can get one to suit your budget and taste. From gold and diamond encrusted Faberge eggs to plain, enamel work on copper and bronze, everything is available. Sterling silver is the most common material used due to its durability and malleability.

There are many different types of Silver surprise eggs that are available both online and in stores. To see the variety or to add uniqueness to your gift, choose a different theme and present this exotic surprise gift to your loved one. Faberge eggs made great gifts on birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries and engagements. You can search online for a beautiful handcrafted metal Egg and see the variety available before you just buy it in the stores around your place. Online stores are cheaper than the brick and mortar ones as the overhead costs are lower.

Most kids enjoy crafts, but stocking up on craft kits and art materials can be quite costly. But with a bit of imagination you can use things you probably already have at home to create things for your children. Here are three suggestions to inspire you to create your own kids craft ideas.

Making robots is a craft which will appeal to children of all ages and no cost to you anything. It will probably require some forward planning as to make the robot you will need to collect toilet rolls, cereal packets, tin foil and any other documents you can possibly think of that would make a good robot.

Creating a robot can be designed with the ability of the child. For example, you may need to help a toddler tape toilet rolls to a box to make its body then let them glue on buttons for eyes and the controls. Older children can probably manage with little or no help.

If you have poster paint, get your children to paint their robot creation afterwards. You will probably need to mix a little PVA glue in with the paint to get it to stick properly and avoid flaking. Create a Story Book or Diary for this you will need a drawing pad, notebook or you can create your own by stapling or sewing lots of sheets of paper together. Just tailor this kids craft idea to suit whatever materials are available to you.

Once you have the basis of your book, get your child to create a story in it. This can be written, photos or a combination of the two. Alternatively, they can use the book to document an event (such as their birthday), what they did in the school holidays, or write about their hobbies or their families.

Instead of drawing pictures they could take photos and print them out to stick in the book. For example, if they are writing a book about their family, they could take photos of their parents, siblings or pets. Or if they have made up a story about knights, dragons and castles they could set up the different scenes using Lego and take a photo of each scene.

Obviously, it is not a good idea to let your child use your £400 SLR camera for this. If you trust them, let them use your digital camera. Preferably, let them use their own children’s camera or borrow one for the weekend from someone who does have one. The Vtech Kidizoom is best for toddlers and the Lego digital camera is more suitable for older children.

Make Masks is a great free kids craft idea, which is only limited by your child’s imagination! They can be used for role playing games afterwards. A great material to use for this activity is fun foam if you have it (or you can purchase it from many supermarkets for around £1). But for an entirely free craft project, make the masks from the back of an old cereal box or paper. Ideas for topics include superheroes, favourite story book characters or animals.

If your children particularly interested in art based activities – and you have the storage space – that’s a good idea to have a basket or box dedicated to storing old boxes, plastic tubs and odds and ends to allow them to create their own craft projects whenever inspiration strikes.

The same is true when creating patterns for your beadwork. It is very important that you take some time to take a seat and really visualise how you need your finish product to look. What’s your idea? What color or beads would go well with this design? Once you have had all these down pat, you can start working on your beadwork. You may find it difficult infrequently to come up with a new design now and then. But this is actually made simpler if you are mindful of all of the differing kinds of basic beading patterns. A vital step is learning the stitches that are available to you and how it’s possible for you to use them individually and even in mix with each other. The mixture of these stitches would be what you call a pattern.

You can choose your patterns depending on your talent level. If you’re just starting to learn about beading, your best option would most likely be the flat peyote stitch. Master this kind of stitch and you’ll certainly find it straightforward to learn all of the others. Another stitches that are commonly utilized in beadwork patterns are the brick stitch and the flat square stitch. Starting out may seem troublesome and you would have to really keep your eye to make certain your stitches look right but in due time and with enough practice it’ll ultimately come naturally to you.

Clueless as to how to finish off your pattern design? Adding a fringe to your pattern design would be best to consider. They seem to be a good way to finish off your patterns as it adds that additional flourish in your design. The most common fringes that are out there are the straightforward looped fringe and plain knotted fringe amongst others. Apart from a fringe, you may choose a cord such as the peyote stitch cord or the platted cord. When choosing the stitch, fringe, or cord to be used in your pattern, don’t forget to consider which type of beadwork you’ll be making. Are you making a necklace, a key ring, a bracelet, or a wine ring? Knowing this beforehand will help you choose a more suitable style. You can even decide to make beaded ornaments for the imminent vacations or you can center them on other special occasions such as weddings, birthdays.

Little girls love their dolls and there is nothing they love in this world more than dressing up their dolls. If you’re good with needle and thread, perhaps you need to look into creating custom doll clothes for these little girls. They will love being able to tell you what they want their doll’s dress to look like and they will love being able to tell you every detail about it. This is something that little girls usually don’t get to do with their doll clothes. They’re usually getting them off of the store shelf and there is around a hundred others on the shelf like it. That can actually be rather frustrating. Little girls hate it when they go to their friend’s house and find that their friend’s Barbie doll is wearing the same dress. That is almost like going to prom and another girl having the same dress. It is a catastrophe.

So advertise your business and make sure you include pictures of custom doll clothes you have made in the past. This is so individuals can see your samples and know that you can do a good job. You can even sell these doll clothes on eBay. You can make them for specific dolls and sell them online. Make sure that you have no two alike so that these little girls can have unique dresses. And make sure you have a measurement system in place so that individuals can tell you the measurements over the Internet and you can make their clothes.

There are lots of reasons why customers are choosing to buy handmade, but the best reasons to buy handmade are these:

1. Buying handmade supports traditional arts. Throughout history artisans and crafters have developed methods and techniques to make items that are useful for everyday living beautiful and unique. Buying handmade supports the continuance of those arts. Without a market for handmade goods some artistic techniques that have been around for thousands of years might die out.

2. Buying handmade means buying one of a kind. In today’s culture that has a relentless focus on uniformity buying handmade items helps you stand out from the pack and express your unique personality with one of a kind pieces of art and clothing. If you are comfortable with who you are and like being different from everyone else than buying handmade one of a kind items is definitely for you.

3. Buying handmade means buying higher quality. If you buy handmade items from a highly skilled artisan or high end crafter the item that you buy will almost always be of much higher quality than something you can get at the local discount store that was mass produced. Handmade items are made with high end materials and carefully crafted so that they will last and stay beautiful for a long time.

4. Buying handmade supports small businesses. Since most artisans and crafters use unique or not mass produced materials that are made by another artisan or crafter when you buy handmade products you’re not only giving money to the artist but also to all the other artists that create the supplies to make that product. Paying more for a handmade item is really an investment because you are helping to support several artists.

5. Buying handmade makes a statement. Making a conscious choice to buy handmade products instead of mass produced ones says that things like quality, craftsmanship, and supporting small businesses instead of big retail businesses matters to you. When you buy handmade you are using your dollars to tell stores like Wal Mart that not every consumer can be seduced by the lowest price.
